From someone who couldn’t imagine taking the plunge into BJJ… Gracie Jiu Jitsu is definitely the way to go. Staff at Tameside Gracie have been very helpful and supportive and it makes a difference. My advice is try a free class and go from there.

Joining Gracie jiu jitsu has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. From day one it’s been incredibly warm and welcoming, no egos, just great people. It’s done wonders for my self-confidence, both on and off the mats, and every session feels like progress. Couldn’t recommend it enough!

Gracie Tameside is an incredible place to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed into a friendly and supportive environment. The instructors are highly skilled, patient, and dedicated to helping every student improve—whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced grappler. The classes are well-structured, with a great balance of technique, drilling, and live rolling. The atmosphere is fantastic, with a real sense of community among the students. Everyone is there to learn, grow, and push each other to be better. If you're looking for a high-quality BJJ academy in the area, I can't recommend Gracie Tameside enough. Whether you're training for competition, self-defence, or just fitness, this is the place to be!

Welcoming and supportive atmosphere with well-structured teaching. I've trained here (on and off) for nearly 3 years despite initially being dubious about trying BJJ as I'm not a rough person and certainly not a fighter. I had visions of big egos smashing white belts and coming home with injuries but I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be quite the opposite. The beginners 'Combatives' course is a relatively gentle and highly structured introduction to the basics and fundamentals, based on cooperation and helping each other progress. The teaching is very high quality, Alex & James are very friendly and enthusiastic about sharing their skills and knowledge. There are videos at Grace University online of each class to revise and improve knowledge between sessions. I also like that the Gracie program incorporates a context of self-defence and not just scoring points in competitions. Due to life pressures I sometimes train sporadically but I'm always made to feel welcome when I turn up. It's a little pricey but I consider that as an investment in myself - improved fitness, confidence, calmness, mental wellbeing and meeting like-minded friendly people. Highly recommended.

Everytime I step onto the mat at Tameside GJJ, the outside world disappears. No ego, no tension, no nonsense. The instructors give clear advice and make everybody feel welcome. From the young kids learning to deal with bully's, to the adults learning to control themselves...everyone smiles when they are on the mat.

Myself & my family have been attending Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside for many years now & we wouldn’t have it any other way. I turned 50 last year, but I find the benefits from attending classes are invaluable. The mindfulness, exercise & self defence with the support from my training partner & the amazing instructors/staff, help with the day to day of life immensely!! Best BJJ Gym for all ages.

I joined GJJ Tameside around three months ago now and I have felt a massive improvement, not just in practice but also my confidence inside and outside of the academy. Alex and James are both incredible instructors and they have been a massive reason to why I’ve fallen in love with Gracie jiujitsu. I can’t recommend GJJ Tameside enough, I have met some incredible people here and I’m enjoying the process. It is such a beautiful place for your mind and a great way to get in physical exercise too! If you’re interested in jiujitsu, this self defence programme is the best place to start!

TL/DR: This place is phenomenal! Considering joining? You should read this review! Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside has been an unparalleled force of positivity in my life over the past year. Joining this community in January 2023 has proven to be the single best decision, I've made in my adult life. Beyond the expected physical benefits and the exceptional, easily digestible Jiu Jitsu instruction, the impact on my personal growth and well-being has been profound. Unexpectedly as a direct result, I’m happier! I've also discovered more about myself, gained confidence, and become a better-rounded individual. Gracie jiu jitsu Tameside, is truly helping me overcome challenges that once seemed insurmountable. Its playing a pivotal part in me overcoming obstacles (like past childhood trauma) Something, I was beginning to think, I would never get past. The sense of community, culture and camaraderie at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside is incomparable; it’s second to none. The people here are extraordinary, and I've forged lifelong friendships. Alex and James, are incredible instructors, they are insanely skilled in Jiu Jitsu and their passion and enthusiasm is infectious! But beyond that. And arguably more importantly, they are also legendary leaders and phenomenal people both on and off the mats. Unhesitatingly, I admit to deliberating and postponing my decision to join Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside at first. Due to nervousness. But after meticulous contemplation over several months (Sept- Jan) months mentally preparing, combing through every review on various platforms, and seeking out every piece of information available, I finally took the plunge. Attending my first class in January. I can confidently affirm that, the decision to join. Has been more than worthwhile for me. Despite the natural nervousness and delay that came with it. My only regret? Not joining sooner! It seems fitting that I now, find myself contributing to the pool of reviews for others to peruse. It appears I’ve come full circle. I hope that this review, alongside the many others, becomes a persuasive nudge for those contemplating joining. To those still in contemplation, I strongly encourage you: take the leap. Your anxieties and worries will quickly fade away, and you'll be left with the life-changing impact of this phenomenal place almost faster than you can say ‘Gracie Jiu Jitsu Tameside’

If you want to be part of a community of like minded individuals, who's drive and enthusiasm is both contagious and admirable then you've clicked on the right place. I've been part of the Gracie family in Tameside for about 3 years now and it was one of the best choices I made after moving up here, I now have a host of close friends and excellent training regimes alongside a cheeky silver medal! Preparing for a blue belt comp in May alongside Alex & James - Living the dream.

A huge step out of my comfort zone, but I've gained so much from the classes, a welcoming environment with friendly people along with great and patient instructors, these classes have given me confidence and helped tremendously with my mental health.

This is the best place I've ever been too. Not only for learning a new sport that helps with self defence but also a massive help for anxiety and depression as everyone is awesome. Unlike your typical gym setting there is no egos and people are there to learn not trying to prove anything.

We might not be for you if:
You just want somewhere to scrap. We’re here to learn, improve and challenge ourselves, not fight for the sake of it.
You want to be the next UFC or BJJ champion. We love competition but fully understand that most people aren't training for that. Train smart, train safe.
Winning matters more than your partner. Their safety will always come before getting the tap.
You bring your ego onto the mat. Tapping, making mistakes and learning are all part of jiu-jitsu.
You'll fit right in if:
You want to learn Jiu-Jitsu for the long term. You’re looking for something you can enjoy and progress in for years. Not a 4 week bootcamp.
You want what you learn to be relevant from day one. Practical Jiu-Jitsu for self-defence, fitness and everyday confidence - not just techniques for competition.
You’re happy to leave your ego at the door. You’re here to learn, improve and help others do the same.
You want to be part of a community. You value good training partners and contribute to the environment around you.
You don’t need to arrive fit, confident or knowing anything about Jiu-Jitsu. Bring the right attitude and we’ll teach you everything else.

Whilst Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is now one of the world’s most popular combat sports, its roots lie in practical self-defence.
Every beginner lesson is built around a real problem someone may face, such as escaping from underneath a larger opponent, defending against common attacks, or controlling distance safely.
At the same time, each technique develops timing, leverage, body awareness and positional understanding that form the foundation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a whole.
The result is training that feels relevant from day one whilst preparing you for the wider world of Jiu-Jitsu as your journey progresses.

Many people are interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but worry about getting injured, being thrown into sparring too soon, or feeling out of place.
That’s why our beginner programme is structured differently.
Every class follows a proven curriculum where you’ll learn techniques step by step in a controlled environment, developing skill, confidence and control before increasing intensity.
The goal isn’t to see how tough you are. The goal is to help you train safely, progress consistently and enjoy Jiu-Jitsu for years to come.

Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially if you’re coming on your own.
That’s why we’ve built a welcoming environment where beginners are supported from day one.
Great instruction isn’t just about knowing Jiu-Jitsu. It’s about making it easy to understand. Our structured teaching approach helps you learn faster, build confidence and make steady progress from your very first class.
Combined with a supportive community that genuinely wants to see you succeed, you’ll never have to figure things out alone.

Build the foundations that everything else will be built on.
Your journey starts with Gracie Combatives - our structured beginner programme covering the 36 essential techniques of Jiu-Jitsu.
You’ll learn practical self-defence and the fundamental positions, movements and techniques of Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, cooperative environment, without being thrown straight into competitive sparring.
The goal is simple: give you a strong technical foundation and the confidence to take the next step.

Bridge the gap between learning the basics and putting your Jiu-Jitsu into practice.
Once you’ve built your foundations, Master Cycle Fundamentals introduces the core offensive and defensive objectives from Jiu-Jitsu’s major positions and helps you understand how everything you’ve learned begins to connect.
You’ll broaden your technical knowledge while gradually becoming more comfortable working with resistance, preparing you for the freedom, complexity and challenge of full Master Cycle training.
Think of it as the bridge between learning Jiu-Jitsu and beginning to make it your own.

A structured pathway for a lifetime of learning.
Master Cycle opens up the wider world of Jiu-Jitsu, with hundreds of advanced techniques organised across seven positional chapters - Mount, Side Mount, Guard, Half Guard, Back Mount, Leg Locks and Standing.
Through technical study, positional training, sparring and Fight Simulation, you’ll continue developing your timing, reflexes and ability to apply Jiu-Jitsu against increasingly skilled resistance.
From here, the journey can continue all the way through purple, brown and ultimately black belt, with something new to learn at every stage.

The best way to find out if Jiu-Jitsu is right for you is to experience it for yourself. Come in, meet us and discover exactly what training at Gracie Tameside is like.

Most people feel this way before starting. The curriculum, pace, and instruction of the course are designed specifically for beginners.
Advanced students are there to help, guide, and support newer students, not to outpace or overpower them. This creates a safe, encouraging learning environment where beginners can progress confidently.
The program focuses on 36 core techniques that are:
- Simple to learn
- Highly effective for self-defence
- Designed to work for most body types and athletic levels
You don’t need experience, coordination, or confidence to start. You just need the right environment, and that’s exactly what Gracie Combatives® is designed to provide.
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and it’s completely understandable.
Jiu-jitsu is a contact martial art, so no one can promise zero injuries. However, most injuries happen because of unhealthy gym culture or rushing beginners into sparring too soon.
At our academy, safety is built into everything we do.
We maintain a culture where students care about their training partners’ safety as much as their own progress. Ego-driven training is not tolerated.
We also delay live sparring on purpose, allowing beginners to first develop proper control, positioning, and awareness. This dramatically reduces unnecessary risk and helps students build confidence.
Classes are closely supervised by Certified Instructors, and students are encouraged to train at appropriate intensity, tap early, and communicate at all times.
While no activity is risk-free, our structured, safety-first approach makes jiu-jitsu far safer than most people expect, especially for beginners.
No need. Getting in shape first is not required.
Most of the conditioning people associate with jiu-jitsu comes from live sparring, which beginners do not do right away in Gracie Combatives®.
Instead, beginner classes focus on carefully structured, progressive drills designed to build your fitness gradually.
As you train, you will naturally develop:
- Better conditioning
- Increased flexibility
- Improved mobility
The goal of the beginner program is not to test your fitness, but to build it safely over time.
You don’t need to be fit to start jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu helps you get fit as you learn.
This is a very common concern, especially for people walking into a gym for the first time by themselves.
Many martial arts gyms attract people who want to prove themselves through ego or aggression. That environment often leads to discomfort and unnecessary injuries.
That mindset does not last here.
Our academy has a clear culture built around mutual respect, safety, and support. Students are expected to care about their training partners’ progress and well-being, regardless of background, age, or experience level.
If you come in by yourself (which most do), you will not be left on the sidelines. Instructors help pair students appropriately, and advanced students are encouraged to support and guide newer students.
Anyone who does not respect this culture is simply not welcome. The result is a welcoming, beginner-safe environment where you can walk in alone and feel supported from day one.
For your very first class, you'll only need to wear suitable gym attire that you can move freely in.
After this, all beginner classes are taught wearing a white Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi. You can purchase directly from us (we often have great introductory offers for new members) or from anywhere else you like.
No!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has an interesting and engaging art/sport that has a big competition scene, and whilst some of our members have decided to test their skills in this format, we don't go out of our way to prepare students (rules, strategy etc) for competition.
Our first priority for our students is that they learn the fundamentals of self-defence. What you need to do to survive against an aggressive, untrained opponent may be different from what you would need to learn for a sport jiu-jitsu tournament.
We understand that most people who train with us are doing so for fitness, health and confidence. When practised correctly, BJJ can be an activity to enjoy for many years!
You can start any time without previous experience!
Our beginner classes are built around a 23-class curriculum that allows you to start at any time. There is no fixed start date and no pressure to keep up with a group.
You can attend the classes in any order, repeat lessons as often as you like, and progress entirely at your own pace. Whether you train multiple times per week or just once in a while, the system adapts to you.
This flexible structure ensures that busy schedules, travel, or time off never prevent you from making steady progress.
You don’t need to keep up with anyone else. You just need to keep showing up when you can.
